Green smoothie challenge

As you might have noticed I am very fond of challenges. One of the Instagram accounts I follow, simplegreensmoothies, starts a new challenge in October. One green smoothie a day for a month, and as you might guess I have decided to join.

As the portions in the recipes add up to two glasses, I asked my fiancé to join. He is never much into sudden change of behaviour or my health quests, but to my surprise he agreed to join!

To warm up I made a really yummy green smoothie this morning, which I will share you. The recipe comes from simplegreensmoothies.

2 cups of spinach
2 cups or fresh orange juice
1 apricot
1 cup of frozen mango
1 banana
1/2 cup of carrots (grated)

On top I added some chia seeds. The result was much better that I expected! Even my fiancé was surprised.

mixed fruit smoothie

The past few weeks I put my new blender to good use. I feel that my body is starting to get used to the new amount of fruit intake, and I like it. When buying fruit, I try to only buy fruit that has been locally produced (within Europe), and that comes with the season, but I do not always  follow. Kiwi’s for example are simply not produced in Europe, and since these are so healthy, I ‘sin’ sometimes and buy them anyway.

This morning I tried something new, and it was really tasty! I added a yakult-like probiotic drink for healthy bowel flora. Instead of ice cubes I use frozen fruit. You can just find them in the frozen section in the supermarket. They are frozen right after harvest, this way they keep all their vitamins and are just as healthy as fresh fruit.


Ingredients of my smoothie this morning were: kiwi, apple, goji berries, frozen blueberries, frozen raspberries, frozen mango, and the probiotic drink (and some water). I had a pommegranate too, but last minute I decided not to add it because of the hard seeds, en the hassle to peal the thing.


The result: YUMMY!


it’s smoothie time!

Yesterday I finally ordered a blender. I was planning to buy one for a while, as it fits perfectly into my plan to live a little healthier. Although I eat plenty of veggies, I notice that besides the office fruit that is delivered once a week, I barely eat any fruit.

Hence the blender. My plan is to start the day with a smoothie at least twice a week to begin with. I have been following Dutch top model Lonneke Engel on twitter and instagram for a while now, and she has a great website, together with several other top models, on healthy and organic food and living ( This website has several recipes for smoothies, mixing fruit with veggies into very healthy and apparently delicious smoothies.

So! My blender will be delivered tomorrow, and that’s when my healthy smoothie life kicks off! To be continued.
